How the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Works

The carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons react with oxygen in the presence of the catalyst, removing them from the exhaust gas stream. This reaction is
particularly suitable for oxygen-rich (‘lean’) gas streams, typical of a diesel
exhaust.

CO + ½O2 -> CO2
[HC] + O2 -> CO2 + H2O
