The CV Show '07, April 23 2007 - As the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) moves closer into focus, operators need to consider the potential impact on their business and be equipped to make informed decisions on the costs of compliance - and non compliance - by 2008.
To help operators to understand the options available to them, emissions specialist Eminox is providing information and advice at a dedicated 'LEZ Surgery' throughout the Commercial Vehicle Show 2007, 24-26 April, NEC Birmingham.
"There is a misconception that buying new vehicles is the only option for meeting the new emissions standards," says Mike Galey, Director of Marketing at Eminox. "This is simply not the case, as emission reduction systems can be supplied for retrofit and are nearly always the most cost effective solution to LEZ compliance."
Eminox is also offering attractive incentives for those who order early for the LEZ. "We are expecting large demand from operators wanting to take advantage of the retrofit route for LEZ compliance. With the announcement expected in May, we believe that demand will grow significantly from June onwards." The company is offering a 10% discount for CV Show orders and enquiries, provided orders are placed within 4 weeks of the show.
A daily charge of between £100 and £200 for non-compliant vehicles to drive within the London Low Emission Zone is proposed. This will mean retrofit of older vehicles would become cost effective at a level of 15-30 journeys inside the LEZ.
"Eminox is ideally placed to explain the alternative options for upgrading existing vehicles and we see the CV Show as the ideal platform to provide operators with sound advice on their options for meeting the new standards."
Eminox designs and manufactures a range of emissions reduction systems which can be supplied for retrofit as well as original equipment. Both Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®) and Fuel Borne Catalyst (FBC) systems can virtually eliminate particulate matter from diesel engine exhaust. This allows vehicles not only to meet the 2008 requirements for the London LEZ (Euro III particulate level) but also meet the 2012 requirements (Euro IV particulate level).
CRT® and FBC systems are both eligible for a Reduced Pollution Certificate (RPC) which proves the vehicle has been upgraded to meet the LEZ standards. An alternative LEC (Low Emissions Certificate) would also demonstrate compliance, but only the RPC has the benefit of reduced Vehicle Excise Duty.
The Eminox CRT® system has already been used in retrofit schemes for city buses across Europe, including London and Paris. With almost 50,000 systems supplied to date, it is the market leading system with proven reliability. The latest developments on the Eminox FBC system will allow it to be used on a greater range of vehicles with smaller engines and lighter duty cycles, making it ideal for vehicles operating in cities.
