Emissions regulations, designed to reduce pollution from heavy duty diesel engines, apply to both on road and off road vehicles in many parts of the world. These regulations have driven improvements in engine technology and exhaust after treatment, leading to cleaner vehicles and improved air quality.

In addition to the European Emissions Legislation, many cities are introducing local emissions regulations to tackle local air quality issues. These are known as Low Emission Zones (LEZs) or Environmental Zones (E-Zones).
