We have been awarded a contract to install our SCRT® system on 9 buses as part of TfL's year long pilot to reduce Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions. This is in support of the Mayor's Air Quality Strategy that proposes all buses in London will meet the Euro IV standard for NOx before 2015.
The majority of the 8,500 buses in London's fleet have our market leading Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®) fitted and are already compliant with Euro IV PM standard, upgrading these to full SCRT systems means that around 2,700 buses could meet the Euro IV NOx standard. This will be a major step towards London meeting its EU Air Quality targets.
The Eminox SCRT system reduces up to 70% of NOx from diesel engine exhausts. NOx is a serious health concern as it can cause inflammation of the lungs and lower resistance to respiratory infections. Our SCRT system, which combines CRT and SCR, reduces more than 70% of NOx and over 90% of PM. Both these systems are supplied as original equipment and for retrofit, allowing vehicles as old as Euro 2 to meet Euro 5 emissions levels.
Other cities that have retrofitted Eminox SCR and SCRT technology to meet their EU Air Quality targets to reduce PM and NOx include First Eastern Counties in Norwich, Lothian Buses in Edinburgh, De Lijn Bus in Belgium and Transport Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) in Barcelona. TMB retrofitted our compact SCRT system to 363 of their buses as part of Europe's largest retrofit programme to reduce PM and NOx. This compact SCRT system went on to win Ecofira's Grand Premier Award for Innovation, presented at this year's Ecofira Conference and Exhibition in Valencia.
